Welcome to the inaugural post here for the Greensboro Record Club. We'll be selecting a better, more appropriate name soon. (My favorite option from last night's meeting? The Knights of Good Taste.) In the meantime, this post is going to serve as a base for our rules about picking records, setting up meetings and so on.
Here are the rules that we've decided on so far and a few that are still in the works:
1) Record Club selections must have been released within the last year and preferably within the current one. We're not looking to spend time going over old music, but rather to use this as a way to keep us listening to new, interesting music that is being released.
2) We're looking at having two people select one record each for each meeting. For the next meeting on June 27th, Andrew Dudek and Jonathan Moore are selecting the albums. We drew numbers from a hat last night to establish an initial order. Patrick Malboeuf and Josh Neas have the two selections for the meeting after the 27th.
3) We still haven't selected a regular meeting pattern, but the main options were either every two weeks or every month.
At the first meeting last night, the conversation centered around the selected album, but went off in lots of directions involving things related in general to the album. We're not strict "you must discuss the record and nothing else" purists about this, but it is hoped that you've given the album up for discussion a good listen or three in order to be able to talk about it and expand the conversation. However, no one is discouraged from showing up just because you didn't get to hear the record. This is about music geekery fellowship, so all are welcome.
This is just a basis for the rules, so in the comments, let's discuss a few things. 1) Names for the record club; 2) Thoughts about frequency of meetings; 3) Should we stick with two people selecting albums, or the other option of one person and then a group vote per meeting or anything else we haven't thought of yet.
Last night was a blast, so I'm looking forward to this immensely. Thanks to Andrew and Zach for taking the idea into fruition.
